Google to skip April Fools’ Day pranks amid coronavirus

Google will skip its traditional April Fools’ Day jokes and pranks across its platforms due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report.
“Under normal circumstances, April Fool’s is a Google tradition and a time to celebrate what makes us an unconventional company,” Google’s marketing chief, Lorraine Twohill, wrote in an email to company brass obtained by Business Insider.
“This year, we’re going to take the year off from that tradition out of respect for all those fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. Our highest goal right now is to be helpful to people, so let’s save the jokes for next April, which will undoubtedly be a whole lot brighter than this one,” she continued.

Someone ought to tell Speaker Nancy Pelosi about the coronavirus outbreak, because her laser focus on pushing her political agenda suggests she’s unaware of it.
The latest evidence: She wants to “retroactively” roll back Congress’ 2017 cap on tax deductions for state and local taxes (SALT), The New York Times reports.
She claims lifting the cap would address the economic fallout of COVID-19. She wants her “fix” to be part of Congress’ next rescue plan.

It’s another attempt, in other words, by Pelosi to use the pandemic to ram through the Dems’ wish list. Last week, she actually held up Congress’ $2.2 trillion rescue plan to push a host of asks — related to climate change, voting rights, diversity, etc.
These various moves show that Pelosi isn’t really taking the crisis seriously — she’s just looking for an excuse to get her partisan priorities passed.

Sen. Rick Scott wants answers about the World Health Organization's response to the coronavirus and its relationship with China.
The WHO, which is a product of the United Nations, has been criticized for echoing claims by China that turned out to be false and could have led to a more disastrous outbreak of the coronavirus. Scott, a Florida Republican, asked that Congress investigate the organization's response to the pandemic.
“The mission of the WHO is to get public health information to the world so every country can make the best decisions to keep their citizens safe. When it comes to Coronavirus, the WHO failed. They need to be held accountable for their role in promoting misinformation and helping Communist China cover up a global pandemic," Scott wrote.
He continued: "We know Communist China is lying about how many cases and deaths they have, what they knew and when they knew it – and the WHO never bothered to investigate further. Their inaction cost lives."

Around 6 million Australians will be able to access replacement wages of up to $1,500 a fortnight as the Australian government spends billions to keep the Australian economy alive and households afloat.
The ‘JobKeeper’ scheme is part of a huge $130 billion package announced by the government on Monday, and takes national spending to $320 billion in just three weeks. The last annual federal budget was worth $500 billion.

The $130 billion scheme will run for six months, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Monday afternoon. He estimates the scheme may go to as many as 6 million workers.
Local share markets recorded their best day ever on the news.
Workers will receive the replacement wage through their employer, whether they have been stood down or continue to be engaged with the business.
“We will pay employers to pay their employees, and make sure they do to keep them in the businesses that employ them and to ensure they can get ready together to bounce back on the other side,” Morrison said.

Australia is on the “global forefront” in terms of testing for the coronavirus, with more than 230,000 tests already carried out across the country.
There are now more than 4500 confirmed cases of the virus in Australia, with 19 people dying from the illness and 50 in intensive care.
Health Minister Greg Hunt said these figures show the virus is having a very different impact here compared to other countries, with the death rate being less than 1 per cent of confirmed cases.
“That is indicative that the testing regime is capturing the significant reflective data for the country,” he said at a press conference this afternoon.
“Of those within ICUs, and in particular with ventilators, in the low numbers that we see – and all of these numbers will climb – but they are reflective again of the numbers. And it presents a very different picture to some other countries, where the lives lost represent not 0.5 per cent but 10 per cent of the cases.
“At this stage our numbers indicate that we are at the global forefront, we have a good
picture of where we’re at.”

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., said on Monday that the United States must attempt to remove essential medical manufacturing from China after its handling of the coronavirus outbreak.
“China turned what could have been a local health problem in Wuhan into a global pandemic and there will have to be a reckoning once we’re through this pandemic,” Cotton told “America’s Newsroom.”
Cotton said that supply chains for pharmaceuticals and medical devices need to be reoriented to the United States.
“We need to look at all the other supply chains that we have in China that we should bring back to the United States,’ Cotton said.

UK furious over China’s coronavirus disinformation campaign against US

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government is furious with Beijing for spreading disinformation about the coronavirus, including that American soldiers may have introduced it in China, and said there would be a “reckoning” when the pandemic ends, according to a report.
“There is a disgusting disinformation campaign going on and it is unacceptable. They [the Chinese government] know they have got this badly wrong and rather than owning it, they are spreading lies,” the Sunday Mail reported, citing a source.
Earlier this month, China began pushing an unfounded conspiracy theory that members of the US Army brought the virus to Wuhan last October when they attended the Military World Games.
The first cases of the virus were reported in Wuhan in December.

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., is planning to resign from Congress on Monday afternoon and will begin as President Trump's new White House chief of staff Tuesday, a Meadows aide told Fox News.
Trump tapped Meadows as chief of staff earlier this month.

“I am pleased to announce that Congressman Mark Meadows will become White House Chief of Staff. I have long known and worked with Mark, and the relationship is a very good one,” Trump tweeted March 6.
Meadows, who has served in Congress since 2013, said in December that he would not seek reelection after his current term. He replaces Mick Mulvaney, who has been the acting White House chief of staff since January 2019, replacing Gen. John Kelly.
Trump has said that Mulvaney will become the U.S. special envoy for Northern Ireland.

Two Coles workers have tested positive for coronavirus and a spokeswoman for the company said the store can remain open as people who pass through have an extremely low risk of transmission.
It comes as Australia records 4360 cases of coronavirus with 18 deaths.
As of Tuesday morning there were 2032 in NSW, 821 in Victoria, 689 in Queensland, 305 in South Australia, 355 in Western Australia, 66 in Tasmania, 78 in the Australian Capital Territory and 15 in the Northern Territory.

Globally, there have been nearly 740,000 cases of the disease recorded with more than 35,000 deaths. The US and Europe are now the epicentre of the outbreak, which began in mainland China in late December 2019.

COVID-19 is a global pandemic affecting millions of people from China to Italy to the United States. No country is spared from the virus – over 600,000 individuals across the world have been infected and over 30,000 have died.
As more people become ill, each country's health care systems will be pushed to the brink in an effort to treat an increasing number of patients. Under President Trump’s leadership, the United States is helping its citizens and small businesses with a $2 trillion rescue package. Our president also made the right call by shutting down all passenger air traffic with China and Europe, and fast-tracking desperately needed medical equipment and supplies to critical hotspots like New York. He has the right team in place to see us through this crisis.
The United States is better positioned than most to weather this pandemic. We have the best health care system in the world and our government and leaders in the private sector are working overtime to protect our citizens from the health and economic impact of COVID-19. Other countries with broken health care systems and leaders who do not care for the safety of their people are likely to be particularly vulnerable.

Media watch: A Disaster for Democracy
Americans have mixed feelings about many institutions amid the virus crisis, a recent Gallup poll found, but they’re unanimous in their disdain for one institution: the media. That’s a “disaster for a liberal democracy,” sighs National Review’s David Harsanyi — and the blame lies with “the press’ own blinkered, sanctimonious and transparently partisan temperament.” That especially includes prestige outlets like The Washington Post and The New York Times. While “institutional bias” at the two papers “isn’t new,” both used to have “a corresponding level of professional gravitas that engendered reader trust.” No longer, as shown by the “frivolous gotchas rather than pertinent questions” they’ve flung at President Trump’s coronavirus task force briefings. Bottom line: The media’s “ineptitude and malfeasance” are especially “dangerous during a pandemic.”

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, slammed the media for what he described was its "grotesque" coverage of the U.S. exceeding China in reported coronavirus cases.
For weeks, China and Italy had led the global count of reported coronavirus cases as the U.S. saw a drastic increase of its own numbers between the spread of the disease and the growing availability of testing kits. On Thursday, the U.S. officially had more reported cases than any nation in the world.
On Sunday, Rubio, a fierce critic of China, blasted the media's coverage, suggesting they are too trusting of China's self-provided data.
"Some in our media can’t contain their glee & delight in reporting that the U.S. has more #CoronaVirus cases than #China," Rubio tweeted. "Beyond being grotesque, it's bad journalism.

The victims said they noticed their package was wet and at first suspected a dog had urinated on it, Fox 11 first reported. But they checked the video from their Ring doorbell camera and saw a deliveryman spit on his hand and wipe it on the box.

Shipments of urns in Wuhan raise questions about China’s coronavirus reporting

Massive deliveries of urns in Wuhan have raised fresh skepticism of China’s coronavirus reporting.
As families in the central Chinese city began picking up the cremated ashes of those who have died from the virus this week, photos began circulating on social media and local media outlets showing vast numbers of urns at Wuhan funeral homes.
China has reported 3,299 coronavirus-related deaths, with most taking place in Wuhan, the epicenter of the global pandemic. But one funeral home received two shipments of 5,000 urns over the course of two days, according to the Chinese media outlet Caixin.

Scott Morrison has told all Australians to stay home unless they are shopping for food, receiving medical attention, for work or education purposes or for exercise (which is capped at two people).

* School closures affect millions of students who are staying home and might use the internet during their longer periods of free time.
* Activists spoke out about internet dangers these children might be exposed to, including pornography and online predators.
* “This is the perfect opportunity for predators to take advantage of children — of all ages,” Dr. Marci Hamilton told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
As schools across the United States cancel classes for increasing periods of time, activists say that children might be exposed to a variety of dangers as they spend longer amounts of time on the computer.
Millions of Americans are living under stay-at-home or self-quarantine orders as governors announce tighter coronavirus restrictions. Fifty states have closed schools, according to Education Week, closures that affect at least 54.5 million students. Many of these schools require students to participate in remote teaching that sometimes requires online classes.
Activists warned the Daily Caller News Foundation that as children spend increasing amounts of time on the internet — whether for online classes or for recreational and gaming purposes — they may be exposed to dangers while their parents are busy working from home or unaware.

Australian reporter Rita Panahi slammed China's Communist Regime and the World Health Organization for their failures to prevent the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak. China was so worried about making sure they weren't blamed for the virus that they did everything in their power to keep whistleblowers quiet. Instead of sounding the alarm about the Wuhan coronavirus, the WHO parroted the regime's talking points, saying the virus wasn't transmitted through person-to-person contact. The organization also failed to recommend travel bans to China.
"I want to talk about China's culpability and conduct throughout the coronavirus crisis that began in Wuhan wet market. The Chinese Communist regime not only lied, destroyed evidence and allowed the virus to spread, but it arrested doctors who, back in December, tried to warn the world about what was happening in Wuhan," she explained. "Some of the whistleblowers arrested and accused of fabricating, disseminating, and spreading rumors have since died. Other domestic critics, from a property tycoon to video bloggers have vanished."
"China is not a regime that tolerates dissent," Panahi explained. "China's initial cover-up included destroying lab samples that established, in December, the cause of unexplained viral infections in the Hubei province. How many lives would have been saved if China had listened to experts instead of silencing them?"

Italy’s coronavirus fatalities have crossed 10,000, according to officials -- more than double the number of deaths reported just one week ago.
In the past 24 hours, Italy suffered 889 additional deaths, bringing the country-wide total to at least 10,023 as of Saturday, and the nationwide mortality rate to 10.8 percent compared last week to 9 percent. The figures were confirmed and reported by Italy’s Civil Protection Agency.

Hanson, a Hoover Institution senior fellow, shared his observations on "The Ingraham Angle."
"A lot of his views ... that were written off as unorthodox, heterodox. If you think about it, they've become almost conventional wisdom now," Hanson told host Laura Ingraham. "I mean, he said you can't trust the Chinese Communist Party in 2015. And lo and behold, we don't now. And he said... you don't really have a country unless you have industry, an assembly of materials here in the United States. And everybody today wishes that we had control over medical supplies and pharmaceuticals."

President Trump on Friday signed a more than $2 trillion legislative package to combat the coronavirus pandemic and send economic relief to workers and businesses squeezed by restrictions meant to stop the outbreak’s spread after the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved the legislation earlier in the day.
"I want to thank Democrats and Republicans for coming together and putting America first," Trump said during an afternoon Oval Office signing ceremony.
The legislation, approved by voice vote despite 11th-hour drama arising from a GOP lawmaker’s objections, amounts to the costliest stimulus plan in U.S. history. It includes checks for most Americans, boosted unemployment aid, help for small business as well as a massive loan fund for corporations – at a time when unemployment is surging at a record pace, a consequence of businesses closing in compliance with social distancing guidelines.

WASHINGTON—The Trump administration is moving ahead with new restrictions aimed at cutting off Chinese telecom-equipment maker Huawei Technologies Co. from one of its main suppliers of advanced semiconductors, according to people familiar with the situation.
At a meeting on Wednesday, top cabinet officials agreed to advance a proposal to hobble Huawei, according to these people. The U.S. alleges Huawei gear could be used by Beijing to spy globally, which Huawei has repeatedly denied.

Exclusive video taken at Perth airport shows bulk surgical masks being airfreighted to China last month as it is revealed a Chinese company sent 90 tonnes of Australian supplies to Wuhan.
The video obtained by news.com.au shows the China-bound boxes of surgical masks stacked up at Perth airport on February 8.
News.com.au can reveal the 90-tonne export of our supplies was made by a second Australia-based Chinese property company, on top of yesterday’s revelation of the bulk shipping of hand sanitiser, gloves and masks by a Chinese government-owned company, Greenland.

The first person from the Wuhan market – where the coronavirus pandemic likely began – to test positive for the virus was a woman selling live shrimps, according to a document leaked to media.
The 57-year-old seafood merchant at Wuhan’s Huanan market, who The Wall Street Journal have identified as a woman named Wei Guixian, first started to feel sick on December 10.
Thinking she was getting a cold, she walked to a small local clinic to get some treatment and then went back to work – potentially spreading the virus to countless others.
“I felt a bit tired, but not as tired as previous years,” she told Chinese news outlet The Paper, recalling her initial symptoms.
