Senate plots path for impeachment trial after witness vote fails
Senators reject motion calling for witnesses in President Donald Trump's impeachment trial; chief congressional correspondent Mike Emanuel reports from Capitol Hill.
The Senate was right to vote Friday against hearing new witness testimony at President Trump’s impeachment trial. The Democrats’ demand for new witnesses at the trial was a red herring – a talking point that had some surface appeal but, upon scrutiny, was nonsense.
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and the other impeachment managers claim that there have been no witnesses in the trial. They said before the Senate voted 51-49 Friday to block more witnesses that if Republicans did note vote to approve subpoenas for former National Security Adviser John Bolton, among other top current and former administration officials, that the trial will be a “sham” – an exercise in “cover-up.” You can’t have a real trial, was their refrain, unless witnesses are called.
It is nonsense. There have been plenty of witnesses. Schiff’s problem is that the additional witnesses he wanted to call would not change what has already been proved in any meaningful way.

Obviously, what’s happening in the Senate is not a trial in any familiar sense. We are used to judicial trials. Impeachment presents something completely different, a Senate trial. The Senate is a political body, not a law court.

Republican Utah Sen. Mitt Romney was notified Friday by a tweet from Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) chair Matt Schlapp that he was “not invited” to the annual conference after being one of two Republicans in the Senate to vote to call additional witnesses in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.

CNN Chief Legal Analyst: 'Trump Won'

Following Friday's vote in the Senate, which killed any hopes of Democrats bolstering their weak case with new witnesses, CNN's Chief Legal Analyst Jeffery Toobin was asked to share his thoughts on what the vote meant in the big impeachment picture.
"Trump won," Toobin declared. "I mean, you know, he's going to win this trial."
If Toobin is throwing in the towel, you can be sure Democratic morale has reached an all-time low. Toobin didn't even complain about the whiteness of the president's legal defenders this time.
"He won on the issue of witnesses," Toobin continued. "He's gonna get acquitted, and that is how history will remember what went on here."
Toobin then said he thought history will also record that there were other "pivotal witnesses who were available to the House of Representatives," before quickly correcting himself: "to the Senate." But Toobin was right the first time. History should record that House Democrats failed to build a strong case in their rush to impeach the president and abandoned legal challenges to enforce subpoenas to gather new evidence and call other witnesses.

The U.S. imposed entry restrictions on foreign nationals and quarantines on Americans returning from the Chinese province at the center of the coronavirus outbreak, as markets tumbled over fears about the impact on global growth.
Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar declared a public health emergency Friday. He said foreign citizens who have traveled anywhere in China within the past 14 days would be denied U.S. entry, while Americans who visited Hubei province would be quarantined for up to two weeks.

After months of hype and pseudo-drama ginned up by the left, public and secret testimony and breathless “smoking-gun” headlines, it’s taking the Senate just two weeks to bring an end, finally, to the impeachment circus. And it is ending with the always-inevitable acquittal of President Trump.
What a tragic, monumental waste of time it has been. After all, anyone capable of rudimentary arithmetic could have seen this foreordained outcome coming from Day One.
Indeed, it’s not entirely clear why House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the rest of the leading luminaries of the Democratic Party even decided to embark upon this national exercise in political self-flagellation. Math is a stubborn thing, and Democrats constitute a Senate minority — a far cry from the two-thirds supermajority required for conviction under Article I of the Constitution.

With little fanfare, the United Kingdom officially left the European Union on Friday, entering into a period of uncertainty after three years of opposing identity politics over Brexit and tense negotiations.
The departure became official at 11 p.m. in Brussels, where the EU is headquartered. Thousands of Brexit supporters waving Union Jack flags gathered outside Britain's Parliament to celebrate the severing of the 47-year relationship.
A recording of Big Ben sounded out as Brexit became official, prompting crowds to sing the British national anthem, "God Save the Queen."

Brexit supporters had been looking forward to the exit since 52 percent of Britain voted in June 2016 to walk away from the EU, which it joined in 1973. Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the departure “a moment of real national renewal and change.”

The impeachment trial of Donald J. Trump is coming down to one big question: Will Democrats, by crying wolf, drown out the more legitimate Republican cry of foul?
“Foul” has served as the GOP’s most powerful and honest argument from the first days of these impeachment maneuverings. Democrats broke every standard of due process, transparency and fairness in their House investigation, making a mockery of their constitutional duty.

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski came out Friday against calling witnesses in President Trump’s impeachment trial, all but assuring the Senate will move to wrap up proceedings with a likely acquittal in a matter of days, if not hours.
“Given the partisan nature of this impeachment from the very beginning and throughout, I have come to the conclusion that there will be no fair trial in the Senate. I don’t believe the continuation of this process will change anything. It is sad for me to admit that, as an institution, the Congress has failed,” said Murkowski, R-Alaska, a key moderate senator who has been closely watched on the witness question.
DEMS SIGNAL THEY WON'T ACCEPT TRUMP ACQUITTAL
The announcement came after Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., who also had been on the fence on the issue, announced late Thursday that he would not support additional witnesses in Trump's "shallow, hurried and wholly partisan” trial.
Right now, Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Mitt Romney of Utah are the only GOP senators to signal support for witnesses. Presuming Democrats vote as a bloc and no other Republicans defect, this would leave the pro-witness side with just 49 votes.

The World Health Organisation has declared the coronavirus outbreak a global emergency with the spread of the virus outside China that is causing concern.
The new coronavirus has now infected 9692 people in 19 countries. It’s killed 213.
There haven’t been any deaths outside of China but there have been three cases of people passing on the infection to others, one of these has a severe infection.
In Australia, nine people have been confirmed to have the virus.
The declaration of a global emergency means the WHO director-general is able to make recommendations on controlling the global spread of the virus, such as screening at international airports.
While there are still many unknowns, more information has emerged about how the coronavirus is being spread.
This is what the scientists have found.

Australian Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Professor Paul Kelly told reporters on Thursday that the coronavirus was being spread by “droplets” and it was not an airborne disease like measles.

House impeachment manager Adam Schiff, D-Calif., continues to prove he is a "pathological liar" and a partisan as he leads the Democrats' efforts to convict President Trump in the Senate impeachment trial, Newt Gingrich said Thursday.
Schiff's description of a hypothetical conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was the latest example, Gingrich, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, said during an appearance on "The Ingraham Angle."
"If the president went further and said to Putin in that secret meeting," Schiff said earlier in the day on the Senate floor. "I want you to hack Burisma, I couldn't get the Ukrainians to do it. And I'll tell you what, you have Burisma, and you get me some good stuff, then I'm going to stop sending money to Ukraine."
"Schiff, personally, is obviously a deranged human being," Gingrich observed.

Coronavirus forcing Google, Apple to take precautionary measures

Silicon Valley is bracing for the coronavirus outbreak to impact its bottom line as Google closed its offices in China and Apple said its production will be affected.
Google, which has 10 offices spread between mainland China and Taiwan, confirmed on Wednesday to Fox Business that the offices — which had been closed for the Lunar New Year — will now be closed for the foreseeable future.
The Mountain View, Calif., company also reportedly said its charitable arm provided a $250,000 grant to the Chinese Red Cross to help with relief efforts and the company’s internal campaign for assistance has raised $500,000.
On Tuesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a call with investors that the company had limited employee travel to China to “business-critical” matters and that the firm is donating to groups trying to contain the outbreak.

President Trump taunted Democrats at a major rally in Iowa Thursday night on the eve of key Senate impeachment action and just days before the nation’s first presidential caucuses there. "We're winning a lot, we're beating them all," he said.
Trump took the stage at Drake University in Des Moines for his fourth rally of the year, which may draw attention away from the Democrats seeking to unseat the president on Election Day, some of whom have been crisscrossing the state for weeks.
In addition, Senate Republicans are expected to have the deciding vote Friday on whether to bring an end to the impeachment trial or to extend it further by allowing witnesses.
Trump cited a "failing New York Times poll" which pitted him against "every one of the socialists," and had him leading against them all.

The World Health Organisation has declared the coronavirus outbreak a global emergency.
The virus has spread from China to more than a dozen countries, with the number of confirmed cases spiking tenfold in a week.
The UN health agency defines an international emergency as an “extraordinary event” that constitutes a risk to other countries and requires a co-ordinated international response.
“The main reason for this declaration is not because of what is happening in China, but because of what is happening in other countries,” WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters on Friday morning.
“Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems, and which are ill-prepared to deal with it.”
China first informed WHO about cases of the new virus in late December.
To date, 8248 cases have been reported, and 170 people have died in China. Eighteen other countries have reported confirmed infections, as scientists race to understand exactly how the virus is spreading and how severe it is.
There are nine confirmed cases in Australia.

The official death toll from coronavirus in China has skyrocketed to 170, with 7711 cases now reported in the country as of Thursday — an increase of 38 deaths and 1737 cases in 24 hours.
World health officials expressed “great concern” on Wednesday that the virus is starting to spread between people outside of China.
The new virus has now infected more people in China than were sickened there during the 2002-2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak.
It comes after coronavirus cases jumped to 5974 on Wednesday — a 30 per cent increase in infections in a day — surpassing the 5327 people diagnosed with SARS.

Although the Chinese health minister and others have suggested the virus is spreading before people get symptoms, data to confirm that has not yet been shared widely beyond China.
“It’s still unclear whether that takes place,” said Malik Peiris, chair in virology at the University of Hong Kong.
If it does, that might explain why China has already exceeded the case numbers for SARS.
“The fortunate thing about SARS, if there was anything fortunate, was that transmission did not take place before symptoms,” he said.
Mr Peiris said if it turned out that the new coronavirus could indeed be spread by people who didn’t show any symptoms, “a pandemic is a scenario that we have to consider”.

State Department advises Americans to reconsider traveling to China amid coronavirus outbreak
U.S. officials ordered workers at the U.S. consulate in Wuhan to return to the United States; Rich Edson reports from the State Department.
Five cases of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus(2019-nCoV) have been confirmed in four states here at home. All are linked to recent travel from the endemic area of China. A sixth possible case – in my home state of Kansas – heightens serious concerns about the impact of this international outbreak of a potentially deadly virus, now in the middle of America.
There are more than 100 other individuals across 27 states currently being monitored by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to determine whether they have been infected with the coronavirus. U.S. health officials remain on high alert and are adapting to the minute-by-minute updates from around the world. There are an additional 86 confirmed cases of coronavirus in 17 countries outside of China.
The coronavirus outbreak that originated in Wuhan, China has spread to more than 6,000 people across that country with over 130 confirmed deaths. While these reports come from Chinese officials, health experts worldwide estimate the actual figures to be much larger. The Chinese government has quarantined more than 50 million citizens in more than 15 cities and villages as the number of reported cases continue to rise by the hour. And finally, the virus infection may not peak until April.

Despite the Chinese government’s efforts to downplay the severity of the outbreak, U.S. and world health officials must continue to insist on our public health officials gaining full access to the infected areas and all relevant information. In the meantime, the U.S. must continue to closely monitor and guard our ports of entry, citizens, and travelers returning from abroad. To control the possible spread of the outbreak domestically, the CDC has set up preventive screening measures in 18 major U.S. airports and multiple other ports of entry around the country.

I encourage all Americans to follow recommendations from their doctor and adhere to the CDC’s warning against travel to China. While the CDC recommends Americans avoiding non-essential travel to the country, I would strongly urge folks to delay any travel to China until we have more information and the situation is under control. It simply doesn’t make sense to put yourself and other Americans at risk.

Researchers have pinpointed one of the global cities most in danger from the spread of coronavirus based on travel data - with two Aussie places on the list.
University of Southhampton academics have released a map showing where the virus is likely to spread in the coming weeks.
The number one city of concern is Bangkok, while Sydney and Melbourne are also likely targets, based on the number of air travellers predicted to arrive there from the worst affected cities in mainland China.

Hong Kong in China came in second on the list, followed by Taipei in Taiwan. Sydney, New York and London are among the top 30 other major international cities ranked in the research.
When it comes to countries at risk, Australia ranked number 10 from the research, while Thailand came in at number 1, followed by Japan and Hong Kong (3).
USA placed 6th, while the UK was 17th.
An outbreak of coronavirus that has killed 131 people has led to travel warnings across the globe.
Despite the virus originating in China, there are now confirmed cases in Thailand, Australia, the United States, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Nepal, France and Canada.

British Airways ceased all of its direct flights to and from mainland China amid the coronavirus outbreak -- with the decision coming after the United Kingdom advised against "all but essential" travel to the rest of the country on Tuesday.
When logging into BA.com, the official website for the airline, it currently shows no direct flights to the country -- with a posted notice, "Sorry, there are no direct flights for this route, flights with connections are below."
“We apologize to customers for the inconvenience, but the safety of our customers and crew is always our priority,” BA said in an emailed statement to Reuters on Wednesday. “Customers due to travel to or from China in the coming days can find more information on BA.com.”

There are fears the deadly Wuhan coronavirus has already infected at least 40,000 people as public health authorities struggle to predict an accurate contagion rate.
Researchers determine how quickly a virus will spread through a population by calculating a reproductive number known as an R0.
The R0 (R naught) represents how many people an infected individual will transmit the virus to others.

As part of his closing remarks Tuesday, Jay Sekulow, a defense attorney for President Trump, urged senators to put themselves in Trump’s shoes. It was an odd but interesting challenge.
When you accept it, the view from there is a series of unhappy flashbacks. It starts with Trump’s 2016 campaign being investigated by the FBI. Before he took office, then bureau Director James Comey showed Trump parts of the Steele dossier, calling it “salacious and unverified.”
Said Sekulow, “It was so salacious and unverified, the FBI had used it to get FISA warrants” to spy on the campaign.

Fox News Channel won big in the ratings this month, with January giving FNC its best month for primetime ratings since the month of the 2016 election.
“FOX News Channel (FNC) has marked yet another historic milestone, notching its 18th consecutive year as the number one cable news network, according to Nielsen Media Research,” Fox News said in a press statement.
The release notes that FNC, “scored its highest-rated month in total viewers since February 2017 with total day and November 2016 with prime.”
“For the 43rd straight month, FNC crushed all of basic cable in total day viewership with 1.7 million total viewers for the month of January. In primetime, FNC was also the most-watched network in all of basic cable with 2.9 million viewers, dominating sports-focused ESPN.”

The Department of Justice is shooting down a New York Times report regarding John Bolton's new book. A leaked manuscript reveals that the former national security adviser suggests that President Trump's withholding of military aid to Ukraine was tied to an investigation of the Bidens. Democrats launched their impeachment inquiry against Trump claiming he abused his power when he asked Ukraine President Zelensky to investigate the Bidens' ties to a Ukrainian gas company.
Another revelation in the leaks is that Bolton reportedly told Attorney General William Barr he had concerns about Trump's relationship with autocrats, such as the leaders of Turkey and China, and it appeared he had an influence on investigations. The DOJ fired back at these rumors on Tuesday.
