China's surging private debt sparking concern

Home loans for individuals continue to grow in China.


BEIJING -- International monetary authorities have sounded the alarm on China's runaway growth in corporate and household debt, but the government here has been dragging its feet, hesitating to implement the painful measures necessary to tackle the issue in earnest.

Flashing red light "Credit growth continues to be unusually high relative to GDP in several Asian economies," the Bank for International Settlements noted in its quarterly review released Sunday. The organization expressed concern about China after its so-called "early warning indicators" picked up signs of potential trouble in the country's financial system.
